Who is the Goddess Hecate?

When you are trying to do witchcraft, some people want to be able to call on someone to help them. Hecate is the goddess of witchcraft, and you can utilize her energy to help you to practice your magic.

This is one of the past witches from ancient Greek times. She is the goddess of life and death and the goddess of magic. She is considered a liminal spirit, and she works with both the natural and the spiritual world.

When you go to a cemetery, you might find her there because she is over death, but she is also over life as well. She will often be there to celebrate life and is associated with reincarnation. She is represented as a canine woman with three heads.

Some say that this is a dark goddess, but she also helps women that need reproductive help to have healing and to be able to give birth easier. Working with her can be a good experience.

• Mythos of Hecate

Hecate has a name that means “will power.” She came from ancient Greek civilizations, and they worshiped her. They would go into a temple called a Lagina and they would worship her. Some believe that she also is part of Turkey, Bulgaria and Greece.

Since she is the goddess of childbirth and fertility, she also is often seen as the goddess of wilderness and was later put into a dark area of witchcraft and the underworld.

She is often a symbol of different myths, and it is thought by some that she is the daughter of nymph and Titan and that she has power to rule over the land, sea, and sky. She is known in other myths like Demeter and Persephone, and she is thought to have found Demeter’s daughter that was stolen from the Underworld.

Some people feel that Hecate is calling them when they are doing witchcraft, and this can often manifest as a hag or some other deity. You might know that Hecate is working with you if you see:

  • Dogs howling at night.
  • Symbols such as torches, daggers, wheels.
  • Graveyards and cemeteries all over.
  • Stray dogs.

You might also know that Hecate is around if:

If you want to work with Hecate, she will find some witches that she loves like midwives, herbalists, healers, morticians and more. Working with her can happen if you try these things:

• • Call on Her

You can call on her, but you need to make sure that you say her name right. Say her name like, “Heh-kah-tee.” When you do this, and you pronounce her name right she will honor you and come to help you.

• • Make an Altar

You can create an altar for her in your home. When you do this, you need to make sure that you put things on it like a broom, a knife, dog figures, star and moon decorations, red and black colors, a key and other things that represent her.

You can give her offerings to get her to come and help you. Here are some things that she loves:

Another thing that you can do to get the attention of Hecate is to do rituals. You can find a crossroad and you can go out and light a candle and do a spell while you meditate to her.

• Take Care of Dogs

Hecate loves dogs and if you have a dog and you name it Hecate or you have a dog that you care for, you can call on her to get her to come to you.

• Feast

Honoring Hecate is easy by offering her food like honey, red wine, mead, garlic, eggs, or other foods. You can do this on August 13^th or November 30^th which is a special night for her.

• Herbs

Hecate loves herbs and she loves herbs that were dedicated to her at the Temple of Colchis. Find out which herbs that she loves and then honor her by offering them to her.

• Dark Moon Ritual

One of the best times to call on her to help you is during the Dark Moon. You can do this, and you can speak to her and get her to come to you to help you in your magic.

• Visit a Cemetery

Visiting a cemetery and doing spiritual work there can help you to call on Hecate. She loves to visit cemeteries and graveyards but make sure that you aren’t playing games or being disrespectful to the dead.

• Offering Hounds

You can leave offerings to Hecate and to her dogs. You can leave them out overnight for her and then if anything is left then you can bury it when you get up in the morning.

• Find the Dog Star

Look at the sky at night and try and find Sirius, the Dog Star. When you look at the sky you can see this without a telescope, and you can remember Hecate as you do.

• Work with Her Friends

Hecate has other allies that work and honor her and here are some that you can also work with:

  • Diana.
  • Circle.
  • Medea.
  • Dionysus.

• Using 13’s

Honor her favorite number, 13. Do things that use this number like giving her 13 flowers or by putting the number 13 on your altar. Some people think that this number is evil or unlucky, but she loves it. 

• Menstrual Tracking

Track your menstrual cycle because Hecate is the goddess of giving life and the menstrual cycle. You can track this with a bracelet, and you can honor her each time you have your period by thinking of her.

• Using Divination

Find a deck of tarot cards and do a reading if you want to communicate with Hecate. Doing this allows you to talk to her and you can even ask her to come to your reading and ask her questions directly.

• Make Tea

There is a tea that you can make to honor her, and you should make the tea and then let it seep for 5-7 minutes with hot water, drain it, and then add pomegranate. Here is how to make the tea:

• • 1 tsp. black tea.
  • ½ tsp. peppermint.
  • ¼ tsp. lavender.
  • 8 ounces of hot water.
  • Honey.

Leave some of the tea for her to have on your altar and have a cup for yourself as well.
